Bar and Restaurant Recycling Update

DPPEA has recently completed a survey of all private and public sector providers of on-site collection services to ABC permit-holders. The data show that private haulers and recyclers are serving over 4,000 bars and restaurants and recycling approximately 25,000 tons of material per year. Nine local governments (Conover, Greensboro, Hickory, Nags Head, Orange County, Pasquotank County, Raleigh, Wilmington, and Washington) have stepped up to the plate to serve another 565 permit-holders, recycling about 3,500 tons per year. Another 1,600 permit-holders are registered as “self-haulers,” bringing additional tonnage to public and private drop-off locations. In sum, an estimated 6,000 permit-holders are recycling beverage containers at the annual rate of close to 35,000 tons per year.
