SURVEY RESULTS: Local Governments Speak About Landfill Disposal Bans

Thank you to the local governments who responded to DPPEA’s recent survey on last October’s disposal bans. Many communities did an excellent job of reacting to the bans with public outreach, new collection efforts and other activities. Communities have seen a jump in both tonnage and public interest in recycling.

A summary is below:

-64% created a Web site to make citizens and generators aware of the bans
-60% wrote news releases to make citizens and generators aware of the bans
-30% added or expanded their program to collect plastic bottles
-29% added or expanded a park and recreation recycling program
-27% added or expanded their program to collect motor oil filters
-23% added or expanded their program to collect pallets
-82% said the bans did increase interest in recycling
-More than half of respondents estimate a 50% increase in collection of plastic bottles from December 08 to December 09
