Help us plaster NC with Recycle Instead decals

Decals reminding people that aluminum cans and plastic bottles are banned from landfill disposal are available for use at your school, church, home trash bin, office, dorm, etc. The decals should be placed on trash containers that often get filled with recyclable cans and bottles. The decal says “Recycle Instead,” hopefully reminding people that there is an alternative to throwing the material away. They should be placed in locations where a recycling bin is nearby or the person can take it home to be recycled.

Thirty-seven local governments partnered with the N.C. Division of Environmental Assistance and Outreach (formerly the Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance), the Association of Postconsumer Plastics Recyclers and Duke Energy to fund the purchase of the decals. Universities, businesses, athletic venues, public schools, malls, etc. are all able to receive decals while supplies last. Just contact Kelley.dennings@ncdenr.gov.

You should encourage your municipalities to invest in placing recycling stations alongside their regular waste disposal areas. The least effort consumers have to perform in order to recycle, the most diversion you will achieve.

We do encourage our towns to put recycling bins out where ever feasible. There are a couple of issues - 1) the cost of getting bins next to each trash can and then 2) the cost associated with servicing each bin. Many companies are now donating bins for away-from-home recycling but we still have to find someone to service them.

Thank you for your comment.
